The 4th of July is fast approaching and all I want to wear is oversized knits by 3.1 Phllip Lim, boyfriend shorts by Rag & Bone, and top that off with black leather simple things. The round gold sunnies from Kate Spade Saturday remind me of my long lost pair of Karen Walker Von Trapps — I miss them so much! We'll see how they pan out when they arrive at my doorstep. Duh, pictures to come (or maybe even video?)

One of the above items is due to arrive on my doorstep very soon. So completely extraordinary and absolutely exorbitant. Yikes! Guess which number it is!

3.1 Phillip Lim

Let's just begin by saying that 3.1 Phillip Lim has hardly disappointed me once since the brand's start in the mid-2000's. I appreciate the consistent ability to create beautifully subtle prints and combine them with large textured knits, shiny leather, and hardware-like embellishments without going over the top. The quilted pink is such a beautiful color to see here — it's an unexpected feminine twist to an otherwise moody and dark looking runway.
I must admit, though, that my favorite aspect of the Fall 2013 runway was the expert layering. It takes real skill to layer clothes and volumes on top of each other and still create a sexy female silhouette. Best of all, in true Phillip Lim style, the details are where the magic is. The sheer sleeves, apron hems, and color-blocking cuff details literally make the outfit, creating 360 degrees of appeal and interest.
It can be hard to see how a collection like this can be worn on the sidewalks of San Francisco, or the East Bay on a pretty night out without looking like I'm trying too hard, but the thing about Lim is that he makes it so easy to dissect the runway look and achieve levels of it by only applying one or two things. That bronzed lip on a clean face? Check. The pairing of super rich brown leathers with warm feminine tones? Of course. Layering collared shirts in varying lengths under sweaters and coats? Done. His clothes make me feel modern, feminine, and confident, which is truly a rare trifecta in today's fashion.

Dark Night, Star Bright

I'm a sucker for all black. You know this. Everyone knows this. But did you know that I have a certain soft spot for funnel necks and leather accents? Little details like these just propel a regular piece like the Helmut Lang coat on the left into something spectacular. On top of that, if you would have asked me a year ago, nay, a month ago, if I'd wear gold and black together in any situation, the answer would be a steadfast "NOPE.COM". But seeing this beautiful 3.1 Phillip Lim and Tom Binns combination is just stunning. It's less of a "look at me, I"m GOLD" and more of a "look I can wear gold and not look tacky." On the shiny theme, adding the patent leather, totally menswear appropriate, Gucci shoes is just to keep this a little on the Annie Hall kind of sexuality.

The New New York Love

It's a thing of beauty, isn't it? 3.1 Phillip Lim's take on a classic with irresistable 90's plaid, with a modern and sheer twist. I couldn't help myself, so I ordered it on Moda Operandi.

The sheer and layered take on plaid, the asian infused slouchy bomber, and the iconic "i heart NY" t-shirt integrated within all of it. I love the 90's slacker styling, but am on the fence on those mod (sheer?) booties. Those type of boots are not very flattering on hippy frames like mine, so in my continuing adoration of this one look I will assume those are sensible sneakers or a leg lengthening minimal heel. The only two ways to go, in my opinion.

Pop Art

It was Labor Day Weekend when this playful outfit happened, which explains the down home backyard BBQ background settings. It was a pretty day, but it wasn't a fancy enough occasion to actually get dressed up. This is where easy knits the oversized, overtly Lichtenstein 3.1 Phillip Lim sweater comes in handy. When playing art pop games what better way to live in the world of color and contrast than with a tailored pencil skirt in a blue jaquard color and a pair of contrasty black ankle boots? The whole thing ends up being retro in a comfortable way, which was perfect for this personal occasion. The cheeky attitude is all courtesy of the Miu Miu sunglasses.

Birds of a Feather Flock Together

I'm hardly ever a fan of brand-on-brand styling but I make the occasional exceptions for beautiful instances like Proenza Schouler's fall pieces. They just so happen to look their best when paired with other Proenza Schouler fall pieces. The embroidered embellishments in the amazing peacock sweater are so mesmerizing that all I want to do is pile on the embellishments by adding the coordinating and equally shiny skirt. The accessorizing is the mix-matchy fun part: 3.1 Phillip Lim Della witch booties in a patent leather, Wolford knee high socks, a VPL bra, Lulu Frost tassel necklace, and a geek chic pair of Prism optical are just enough to handle the overly-embellished school girl vibe with aplomb.

Colonel Mustard

Strictly speaking this color is actually more of a fine dijon mustard than a plain-jane, ordinary, everyday mustard. 3.1 Phillip Lim's shift dresses are one of the few trusty things to count on to look like a million bucks, despite the simple shape. So this outfit is an ode to its simplicity and pop of color. The Fendi chameleon bag is a travel ready companion in an equally spicy color, and The Row sunglasses and Tabitha Simmons ankle boots are simple in design but full of subtle details that play off this dress perfectly.

Modern Minimalist

Those Balenciaga boots are haunting me until this day. Love 'em. It goes without saying then that they are the stars of this outfit. Although, the 3.1 Phillip Lim sheer paneled dress is a real contender. Love the conservative shape and the sheer touches. Just enough skin to keep it interesting. The Row sunglasses are a play on the sheer, while the Chloé Marcie cross body bag is just sweet enough to soften up the rough edges in the dress and boots.

It's Never Too Early For Fall, Particularly 3.1 Phillip Lim's Sheer Pants Runway Kind Of Fall

What choice do I have when the beautiful sunny weather goes away and suddenly the mornings, afternoons, and evenings are filled with the unmistakable (sad) chill of winter? None, that's what. So I mix it up a couple days and start test driving out a couple Fall 2012 looks I was obsessed with when they walked at New York Fashion Week. This one is all 3.1 Phillip Lim. This floored me:

The idea of a tiny mini skirt in a matte leather looking all the bit classy was mind-blowing. You dress it way down with a pair of sheer pants and over-dress the top with a loose knit. It's a great way to wear a classic pump in a completely new way.

Neapolitan

Dressing as ice cream? Not a foreign concept on this blog, since the last time it was raining I decided to dress up as an ode to Mint n' Chip. Today, I'm in a brighter spirit and dressing up after a personal favorite of mine Neapolitan. It's not the flavors that get me, it's the color combinations. Pairing the most delicate pink with the prettiest cream, and then cutting it all down with a rich black. It's lovely.

3.1 Phillip Lim knows what I'm talking about seeing as all the pieces for Spring 2012 happen to be individual confections themselves. These 3.1 Phillip Lim zipper detail pants have been on my mind since they paraded down the runway with a cool flutter detail. They're both athletic and feminine. The Elizabeth and James top compliments the athleticism with a cross back top, but keeps it dressy with a satin finish. Let's move on to the rich black side because it has the most exciting shoes you'll ever see this spring— the Versus Decollette pump. They come in sorbet colors, too! They are structural, patent-leather, and most of all, just so freaking cool. I'd wear those literally forever. The classic Chloé bag is a nod to the structure in the Versus shoes, and the the top is light as air Prism sunglasses, calling on the mesh transparent detail in the pumps.

That Rainy Day Mint Chip

Who doesn't like Mint & Chip? Probably sad, lonely people. It's a curious thing that I always want to eat mint & chip ice cream when it's cold and rainy outside. Which is how I came up with the idea of creating an outfit in homage to the flavor. Plus I just ordered those completely adorable utilitarian Tatoosh Clyde rain booties and now I am contemplating outfits for it.

The A.L.C. Zoe blazer is just so beautiful to me. It has no collar, which could be weird, but it makes up for that by having tuxedo elements. Every time I got to Barneys in San Francisco I am completely in love with anything by Fornasetti. Especially this whimsical Fornasetti hot air balloon umbrella. The
T by Alexander Wang shirt dress with sheer panels is also on my wish list because it will look so good with anything. Just throw some Wolford opaque tights under it and you're halfway out of the house.

This is where it gets completely into my wish list again. Behold the completely adorable 3.1 Phillip Lim Mini Pashli Satchel . The texture is oversized alligator and the size is über mini. Plus it's a cross body bag, which I am in love with due to the fact that when it's raining you just don't have the arm capacity to place a pretty handbag in one. Smart.
