Somber Fiesta

In real life, this ruffled top is a pretty mix of ocean blue with retro pink and yellow weaving hues swirling about it. It looks almost like a farmer's market shopping basket that Mexican women carry — which is part of the reason I absolutely loved this top the moment I saw it. I tried it on over whatever dress I was wearing, right then and there, no dressing room needed, and boom: it was beautifully proportioned ruffles that make anything you're wearing look like a fiesta.

Color photos coming soon, duh, because this top is so beautiful in full living color (get it?!, like the show!). I just wanted to showcase the bright top in a quieter way, since my mom did such a beautiful job capturing the details.

Nothing like a dress event catered specifically to the petite San Francisco masses to bring out some disturbing shopaholic behavior. A little white wine can't hurt either, slowly whisking away all good judgement and notions of a budget because you're "just here to browse"....right. My expectations were low when I went to the event, having a hard-etched notion of what an Anthropologie purchase would look like and no real need for that type of fashion fare in my closet at this moment. Needless to say I was blown away and eventually a little carried away. What I found in store was that the quality of the dresses, particularly the embroidered ones, are incredibly upscale and very expensive looking. Which is a real surprise for a store more known to me for a plethora of quick pleasing candles, unique decor, quirky dresses and casual separates. I never expected to find so many cocktail and party dress options, especially some that were so timeless. I walked away with the fiery red dress, knowing it'd be a show stopper at any occasion now, next year, whenever.

I'm a sucker for buttoned-up shirts. Fact. I have about a dozen of them and am no stranger to buttoning them up all the way to the tippy top — almost like it was mandatory, say a uniform of sorts. I'm not sure why, since I'm pretty sure they'd look equally fantastic with a little room to breathe. I'm just not one to show much skin, I guess, and find an equal sexiness is the conservative. There's just something about the way a buttoned-up outfit can look almost subversively proper that suits my personality. Especially when there's a stud or two to be noticed — on the shirt, the ears, and the wrist.

I couldn't help myself. I had to post another set of the photos we took in Dixon. I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed lounging around in an authentic retro poolside environment in my lady chic outfit. In reality, the Acne pencil skirt is doing all the work in these photos. The school girl jacquard fabric in a ladylike pencil shape, accentuated with edgy zippers, is the centerpiece of the look to me. It fits like a dream, and literally, required no hemming or tailoring at all. On a pencil skirt. So instead of calling this a repetitive topic, let's instead look at it as a celebration in buying a fitted piece off the rack and wearing it like it was made for you. Works for me.

Electric Youth

This was my Super Bowl day outfit. There was so much testosterone in the air that my outfit was inspired by masculine fabrics and touches. It turned my feminine pleated skirt more neutral in an electric neon green, topped off by a chambray shirt tied in a bow lieu of a belt, Raybans versus my typical cat eye, and of course, the irresistible Dior water lilly nail polish that has not come off my nails for weeks (I reapply, of course, but I have no desire to put something else on.) The shoes are DKNY, pretty much the most comfortable bondage-looking strappy sandal. They were a steal on Net-A-Porter.

Did I watch the game? No, I did not watch the game, but instead sat on the couch and watched Drive. That movie, awesome. Soundtrack? Even better.

Of course you can always wait for Spring 2012 to get the original runway version on the right, with it's poncho shape and oversized draped texture, but that's going to run about $1,000 extra.
