Nihilism, aka The Holidays Are Here

I'm in a mood. And this is only a phase, so yes, it's going to pass. But in the meantime my posts (or desire to post) about fashion and other silly girl things are going to be a little bit jaded and a little sporadic — thank you Clueless for teaching me this word ages ago. While my sulking gray mood will pass with the holidays (it always does), I suspect my shopping behavior is changing permanently: I no longer want all the things. That thrilling feeling  of new shit just doesn't cut it anymore. Maybe because I'm getting older —I had a birthday last week —and I'm being reflective and taking stock of my life in the past year. I've done a lot but I realize that my most personal and longest running project (this blog) is a challenge for me these days because as I grow older my focus on fashion is becoming a little more subdued, more boring I guess you can say if you're comparing my blog to other more colorful and exciting post-every-day kind of blogs. I just want to be thoughtful with my posts so that's why you're seeing so much less of them.

Disclaimer: It's not that I'm important enough to explain the gap in-between posts, but it's that you (the reader) is important to me that I feel the need to keep you hooked in some capacity with my honesty.

From Now On All I Want To Wear Is Ellery

I haven't been inspired lately by much, but this is perfect. It makes me excited to get dressed again. Clarity! Also, note to self: cut your hair, bypass all predisposed genetic tendencies to have frizzy poofy hair and mimic the nonchalant hair flip seen here. Shop the looks on Moda Operandi!

The Uniform

Fact: furry coats will save you time and make you feel good on "fat days." It's like a bathrobe that you wear in your house, except its perfectly acceptable to wear it out in the world. This outfit is a lazy one, made entirely of stretchy fabrics, an Everlane shirt for the peeping collar effect, and not much else. That leaves me feeling a little self conscious because of how body-conscious it all is. I don't like wearing overly tight things--draws too much attention, you know?To make me feel better lately, I've gotten in the habit of wearing what is essentially a body suit underneath voluminous sweaters and coats. The overall effect is pleasing to my eye, my holiday gut, and any bystander who gazes in my direction. It's what I like to call my woven fat suit that looks pretty good these days to both fashion and non-fashion people

Office Friendly Grunge of the Minimal Kind

BALENCIAGA  boots  /  ZARA  scarf  /   WAYNE  dress  /  KAREN WALKER  sunglasses

Take a relatively simple dress, with almost a negligee feel, and toughen it up with a pair of heavy duty boots and you'll be surprised how grunge the contrast will be. On top of that layer on a plaid scarf in a wooly fabric and all of a sudden the dress seems almost casual. I know in a world according to Saint Laurent, we'd all go full 90s grunge with girlish prom dresses layered under lumberjack plaid, but that would read awfully desperate in the cool confines of my corporate building. I much prefer taking in the trend in small doses.

Outfit Sounds: Blurred Lines

JACQUEMUS /  SPORTMAX  / ALEXANDER WANG

I am into this notion of showing a sliver of belly skin. Not in an overexposed Britney Spears kind of way, but more of a grown up infusing some unexpected sex appeal to an every day outfit. The whole thing reads very tame, but it's that half inch of crop that makes it slightly retro and incredibly modern at the same time. I'd do this with a pencil skirt, because if you're going to be a little bit sexy on top I like to keep the rest of it buttoned up. Except for the shoes, go all out with those. Sexy, strappy, Alexander Wang heels. It's like a thong for your feet. Enjoy the music in this post because it's been stuck in my head for weeks.
The safe-for-work video is mesmerizing.

Invest In Your Sanity: Pieces You Need For Trying Days When You Have "Nothing To Wear"

Simple, clean, effortless. Seems easy enough, right? That is an endless uphill pursuit some days, when all I need to get out of the house is an outfit that just works. Those trying days where nothing fits or  looks right  are solved by an outfit made of transitional easy pieces like these: Classic, leg-elongating The Row pants, topped off with a fitted superfine Theory t-shirt with a contrasting athletic stripe down the sides. Minimalist and modern The Row cat eye sunglasses literally got with everything, thanks the the transparent acetate and soft brown lens. I am a little blown away by the price, but when you find something that just works (damn it), I find it hard to resist calling it an "investment in my sanity."  The heels? They are sex on your feet, courtesy of the leopard print by Givenchy. Finally, the studded and tasseled bag by Mulberry is refined, lady-like, but with a hard edge. Put yourself out of your misery and invest in some of these ASAP.

I'm going to find it very hard to resist this collection. It's entirely appropriate for the entire year, and it has the elements of style that are part of my permanent collection: Lean tailoring, layered buttoned up shirts, a clean somber palette, and minimalist approach.
