What can I say? I was heavily inspired by Jil Sander when I put this together. The S/S 2015 runway had a lot of bold, boxy layers in various deep colors — like a Crayola box of special Fall colors. The way it was all put together just looked so polished yet masculine at the same time. I don't even mind the boxiness of it all. Boxy layers are my allies because they make me feel powerful in a way. As if dressing slightly more masculine myself makes me stronger. Even despite the dumpy crotch situation that tends to happen with boyfriend jeans this particular combination has the makings of a closet favorite.

Working from home on the weekend looks like this. Not all the time, duh. Sometimes I work in my pajamas straight into the evening and wonder what I'm doing with my life as I stare at my unworn closet that day. Those days are learning lessons: get up, get dressed, make an effort and it makes a huge difference in my motivation. Even if it's just for me. (Note to self: while you're at it with all the effort and what not, just know that ironing clothes also makes a difference. Clearly I skipped that part, so apologies. Small steps.)

Dressing for the Freakin' Weekend

Sweet dreams are made of these. And by sweet dreams, I mean weekends. And by these, I mean these pants I found at Target. They are the most comfortable and versatile thing I've picked up at Target for $20 since the last 48-pack of toilet paper. It goes to show that you don't have to be a snob about everything all the time. Brand names this, designer label that. That mentality is silly, especially when you realize that the moment you purchase a piece of clothing it immediately decreases in "value" by about 75%. Don't believe me? Try reselling your wardrobe anywhere (The Real Real, eBay, Crossroads, etc.). You will get pennies on the dollar and you will be left feeling sheepish for making such impulsive decisions in the first place. I spend the major monies on accessories, like the Tibi mules in the photos, and then balance out the rest of the outfit with things already in my closet and cheaper seasonal finds. This way, I get to occasionally indulge in the designer items, but not entirely break the bank satiating my desire for something "of the moment."

What to Wear to a Client Meeting
There are some days where it's very possible that I may spend my entire day running around like a chicken for a client presentation. Those are times where a) I have to look über-presentable, b) feel very confident and comfortable, c) not fuck it up. And chances are if the stakes for a client presentation are that high, the chances are equally great that the entire team will have stayed up the night before (college style!) making last minute edits and having run throughs. So basically you'll be dead tired.
This is an outfit for those times, my business-oriented and fashion-loving friends. All black, a little fashion forward, and above all, very comfortable. While I normally would never wear a crop top to work, this one has enough volume to be an interesting counterpoint to the otherwise standard slacks and shirt business combination. The slacks in question here are actually trousers. Theory trousers to be exact that were purchased about 6 years ago in one of my rare full-price plunges ($365 at the time, ah!). I had my doubts because they were so...masculine (they have pleats, and they taper, both very tricky things when your hips are big), but they are actually draped so perfectly that they manage to slim down my hips. That is fashion magic, which justified the price back then, if I had a time machine I'd fly back to 6 years ago when I was contemplating these pants/trousers/magical-leg-sleeves and would have said to my silly self, "You're ass looks great in these. And Theory stops making theses pants in the future. Get two."
Can we talk about the trench coat now? I've never once thought that I'd be advocating a silk trench coat as an adult person. But here I am swearing to you it's the greatest jacket for spring despite the comparisons you'll get to Dick Tracy or Trinity from the Matrix. Those are compliments, so take them as such! As evidenced by my Insta-vid, it has classic construction, but in a fabric that is so flowing it translates as effortless on your body.
Finally, the Tibi shoes: the show-stoppers. They look like a sky high mule, but in fact are walkable like a wedge because of that black band around the heel. (Note: If you manage to find a pair, I implore you to size up!)

The nice thing about high and low dressing is that a couple of well-made and expensive looking items pretty much make the outfit. Consider the plain Zara t-shirt. The color is lovely, yes, but it's definitely nothing more than a plain t-shirt, and the wax coated pants are if anything pretty basic. What makes anything about this outfit mine and maybe even memorable in my mind are a pair of well chosen accessories and contrasting fabrics. The Tibi mules, with the standout embellishments that make them a special sort of mule, and the J. Crew blazer in a plaid grandpa-esque fabric (that is insanely well made!) plays with the olive tones in a fun masculine way.

As far as Spring 2014 shoes go, Tibi mules were at the top of my wish list. "Enter the promo WELCOME2014 for 15% at Tibi.com" was all I needed to hear to pull the trigger (again) after finding out this runs one size entirely too small. (Sorry Moda Operandi, I done goofed). So unless you want your little footsies hanging off the heel edge you'll order up a size as well.
